About five years ago, my health took a turn just as we were about to temporarily move to a remote island in the far south of New Zealand with our three- and five-year-old children. Close to departure time my thyroid started swelling up, and by the time we arrived on the Island I was shaky, and not my usual self on any level. I felt super anxious and my moods changed at the drop of a hat. I felt overwhelmed, panicky, sweaty and my heart was racing so badly I stopped exercising – out of fear I might over-exhaust my heart. Gone was my #1 stress relief. I could no longer sleep at night and the insomnia made everything much worse. My skin broke out so badly and my hair started falling out – it was depressing. Blood tests by the local nurse confirmed I had ended with Hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.
I scheduled a doctor’s appointment and was prescribed strong anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the inflammation in my thyroid. However, due to the swelling, I couldn’t receive the standard treatment for hyperthyroidism. Feeling as unwell as I did, I realized I needed to take quick action on my own, so I began researching the condition.
I was so surprised to learn that the answers for my thyroid issues were in my gut!
I began making dietary and lifestyle changes, treating food as medicine. I focused on incorporating nourishing foods and eliminating those that worsened my thyroid issues. Along the way, I discovered that my gut also needed healing, which I hadn't initially realized.
I was amazed and grateful that this lifestyle shift allowed my thyroid to regain its balance naturally. I learned so much during this journey, but the most impactful lessons were understanding the power of food, healing my gut, managing stress, and addressing toxins.
